+ GE in Formal Education
A legislative framework for ESD was formulated (global education and ESD are not interchangeable but they share common goals) which integrates all related thematic areas (Environmental Education, Health Education and Cultural Issues) into a common sustainable whole-school approach, to provide schools with an overall unified framework equally applied to all sectors of education, under which any specific activity is carried out in a concerted way. School Activity Programs (Environmental Education, Health Education and Cultural) are implemented in the Primary and Secondary School Units every school year. These Programs relate to environmental, social and cultural issues, which are of particular concern to local communities and need to be resolved in the light of the principles of sustainability. Topics covered by the Programs include human rights, children’s rights, racism and xenophobia, education in democracy, contemporary social issues, refugees, immigrants, social cohesion, population movements, democracy education, skills active citizenship, volunteering and solidarity, cultural diversity, values of life (respect, love, peace, cooperation, responsibility, tolerance, freedom, honesty, kindness, offer), prevention and treatment of violence among students at school, etc.
Curricula leaves flexibility to the teachers in the formal education system to promote the principles of global education and to apply global education methods in and out of the classroom. (DEAR in Greece 2019: contexts and project observations)
The Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs in collaboration with the Institute of Education Policy had recently undertaken an initiative under the name of “Ergastiria Dexiotiton: 21st-century skills labs” - new (for the existing curricula) thematic areas with a global view.
Finally, the notion of “Global education” is crucial as a goal in the context of the new school curricula.
ll curricula are revised and global education is integrated transversally.
