+ Concepts and Definitions
Education for Sustainable Development is embedded in a number of legal provisions and strategic documents directly regulating or indirectly concerning education in the Republic of Slovenia.
The Resolution on Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Assistance of the Republic of Slovenia adopted in September 2017 states:
“Slovenia recognises the role of global education in the eradication of poverty and implementation of Sustainable Development. Slovenia promotes activities of global education for a better understanding of developments in the world, their causes and consequences, as well as correlations between local and global dimensions.”
The Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Assistance Strategy of the Republic of Slovenia until 2030 adopted in December 2018 states:
"Slovenia recognises the role of global education in eradicating poverty and inequality, achieving sustainable development, and educating active and responsible global citizens with a sense of solidarity. Global education is a lifelong process of learning and action, reflecting the complex interdependence of global actions and the individual’s engagement. As it consequently constitutes a significant element of development cooperation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to foster and enhance this concept in close cooperation with the ministry responsible for education. By doing so, Slovenia will implement SDG target 4.7, i.e...”
SLOGA, Slovene national platform of NGOs for development, global education and humanitarian aid (Slovene Global Action) uses the term of Global Education:
“Learning for a globally balanced coexistence or, in short, GE is a lifelong process of learning and acting that emphasizes interdependence and the individual’s involvement in global events. The goal of this kind of learning is globally responsible and active individuals and communities. GE is a process of encouraging individuals and communities to engage and act to address the key common challenges of humanity. To this end, it is necessary to develop formal and non-formal education and learning programs based on the development of critical thinking skills and other personal and social skills. Thus educated and trained active citizens can contribute to more equitable and sustainable economic, social, environmental and human rights-based national and international policies through their own activities and activities within various organizations.”
Notes: SLOGA’s GCE working field is currently in the process of updating the definition of GE (expected to be updated in 2021). NGOs also use the definitions made by UNESCO and North South Centre of Council of Europe.
+ GE in formal education
ESD is a cross-curricular topic included in general objectives of education in Republic of Slovenia. Goals and outcomes in syllabus-es and curricular documents only rarely include an integrated approach that would address all three aspects of ESD (from Increase presentation).

The Education system in the Republic of Slovenia 2018-2019.
The White Paper on Education in the Republic of Slovenia is a strategic document from 2011 which contains a professional basis for the development of the education system in the Republic of Slovenia, the views of the profession and the politics and the reports on the situation in educational institutions.
Global Education is not a topic embedded in the curriculum, however many teachers have been including it in their teaching. Some handbooks by NGOs on how to include Global Education in formal education subjects have been developed, as well as some analysis and reviews on Global Education inclusion in the formal education system. NGOs are also regularly providing trainings, seminars, workshops, conferences, clubs and motivational days for teachers on GE. Many of these activities are funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Government Communication Office and/or European Commission.

In addition to the compulsory part of the curriculum, secondary school students also take compulsory separate subjects, where the area of ESD and GE is covered by Citizenship culture and Education for peace, family and non-violence.
Citizenship culture teaches students, among other, to develop views and behaviour that allow them to participate in society; promotes the values of a democratic political culture: individuality, critical thinking, tolerance, a culture of dialogue and argumentation; and develops their awareness of civilisation, societal and other problems as well as their ability of independent judgement.
+ GE in nonformal education
Activities in nonformal education are implemented mainly by the NGOs and are often co-funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry for Environment, the Ministry of Interior , the Government Communication Office and European Commission. Experts, working in NGOs, are well respected in the field of global education (especially in NGO sector) on European level.
With the aim of getting Global Education recognized in nonformal education implemented for all age groups, Slovene NGOs have been working with different partners such as youth centres, libraries, Slovene Institute for Adult Education, young entrepreneurs, regional hubs, Adult Education centres, municipalities, refugee centre etc.
SLOGA is a national coordinator of Global Education Week, which is coordinated by the North – South Centre of Council of Europe. Each year up to 110 activities are implemented by different stakeholders and a national thematic coordinator for Global Education at Lifelong Learning Weeks festival, coordinated by Slovene Institute for Adult Education (more than 340 GE events in 2019 edition).
NGOs are also regularly providing trainings, seminars, workshops, conferences, clubs and motivation days for teachers on GE. GE handbooks, tools and methods are developed and/or updated and promoted to teachers.
